How the quiz decides what to recommend, and what it deliberately does not do.

We Match, We Do Not Rank

You will not find numeric scores, star ratings, or a "best overall" leaderboard anywhere on this site. That is a deliberate choice, and it is worth explaining. A single score has to assume that every practice values the same things, and that assumption is simply false. The free EMR that is perfect for a cash-strapped new solo practice would frustrate a ten-provider group, and the configurable enterprise suite that group needs would bury the solo doc. Ranking them against each other tells you nothing useful. What helps is knowing which one fits your situation, so fit is the only thing our quiz measures.

What We Actually Compare

For each of the 11 systems we cover, we maintain a profile of its real, checkable characteristics. Some of these are matters of public record: pricing models, whether there is a free tier, whether telehealth and EPCS are built in, whether native mobile apps exist, whether the software is open source. Others are well-established reputational facts, such as which platforms the DPC community keeps choosing, which one behavioral health practices gravitate toward, and which ones large groups rely on. We build these profiles from vendor documentation, published pricing, user reviews across multiple communities, and conversations with practices that use the systems daily.

How Your Answers Become a Shortlist

When you take the quiz, each answer tells us something about what you need, and we check that need against every system's profile. Say you tell us budget is tight; the free and low-cost platforms move up your list and the premium suites move down, no matter how impressive their feature lists are. Say you tell us documentation burden is your biggest pain; the platforms with genuine AI documentation move up. If you flag a deal-breaker, anything that fails it drops sharply. When all your answers have been considered, we show you the two or three systems that fit best, along with the specific reasons each one made your list.

Because the reasons are attached to your answers, they change when your answers change. Retake the quiz as a different kind of practice and you will get a different shortlist. We think that is exactly how it should work.

What the Quiz Cannot Tell You

An honest methodology page should admit its limits, so here are ours. The quiz cannot judge how a system will feel to you in daily use; that is what demos are for, and nothing replaces them. It cannot verify a vendor's support quality this month, since that shifts with staffing and growth. And it covers 11 systems, not the whole market, so a niche specialty tool that fits you perfectly might not be in our set. Treat your results as a well-reasoned starting shortlist, not a verdict.

Keeping Profiles Current

EMR products change constantly. We review each system's profile periodically and whenever a vendor ships something significant, changes pricing, or gets acquired. If you spot something we have gotten wrong or that has gone stale, please tell us at hello@bestemrs.com; corrections from people using these systems every day are the most valuable feedback we get.

A Word About Money

Some links on this site are affiliate links, and we may earn a commission if you explore a product through them. This is how the site stays free. It has no effect on the matching logic: the quiz reads only your answers and each system's characteristics, and a vendor cannot pay to appear on your shortlist. If a free option fits you best, the quiz says so, commission or not.
