How we evaluate and recommend EMR systems.
The 11 Dimensions
We evaluate every EMR in our database across 11 distinct dimensions, each scored from 0 to 100 based on a combination of hands-on testing, published feature documentation, user reviews, and industry expert assessments. These dimensions are designed to capture the full spectrum of factors that influence whether an EMR will be a good fit for a particular practice.
AI Features
Evaluates the breadth and quality of artificial intelligence capabilities, including ambient documentation, clinical decision support, predictive analytics, automated coding suggestions, and intelligent workflow automation.
Ease of Use
Measures the intuitiveness of the user interface, the number of clicks required for common tasks, the quality of the onboarding experience, and how quickly a new user can become productive with the system.
Billing and RCM
Assesses the quality of revenue cycle management tools, including claim scrubbing accuracy, first-pass acceptance rates, denial management capabilities, eligibility verification, and reporting depth.
Pricing Value
Evaluates the overall value proposition considering the subscription cost, implementation fees, included features, and the total cost of ownership relative to the functionality delivered.
Mobile Access
Scores the quality and completeness of the mobile experience, including native app availability, feature parity with the desktop version, offline capabilities, and overall usability on phones and tablets.
Telehealth
Measures the quality of built-in telehealth capabilities, including video quality, patient accessibility, documentation integration, scheduling integration, and HIPAA compliance.
E-Prescribing (EPCS)
Evaluates the prescribing workflow efficiency, formulary integration, drug interaction checking, prior authorization support, and specifically the ability to electronically prescribe controlled substances.
Customization
Assesses how extensively the system can be tailored to specific workflows, including template customization, form builders, configurable dashboards, and API access for custom integrations.
Support Quality
Measures the responsiveness, availability, and helpfulness of vendor support, including support channel options, response time guarantees, dedicated account management, and user community resources.
Patient Experience
Evaluates patient-facing features including the patient portal, self-scheduling, self-registration, secure messaging, online payments, and automated communication and engagement tools.
Interoperability
Scores the system's ability to exchange data with other healthcare systems, including HL7/FHIR support, health information exchange participation, lab integrations, and referral network connectivity.
How the Matching Algorithm Works
When you take our quiz, your answers create a personalized weighting profile across our 11 dimensions. For example, if you tell us that billing and revenue is one of your top priorities, we increase the weight given to the Billing and RCM dimension in your match calculation. If you indicate that mobile access is essential, the Mobile Access dimension gets a higher weight.
Each quiz question can influence multiple dimension weights simultaneously. Your practice type affects how we weight complexity and customization. Your specialty influences which features are considered essential. Your budget constrains which pricing tiers are realistic. Your deal-breakers can disqualify systems entirely regardless of their other scores.
The final match percentage for each EMR is calculated as a weighted average of its dimension scores, normalized to a 0-100 scale. We then sort all EMRs by their match score and present your top recommendations with a breakdown of which factors contributed most to each match.
Score Updates and Accuracy
EMR products evolve constantly, and we update our dimension scores quarterly to reflect new features, pricing changes, user feedback trends, and our own ongoing evaluations. If you believe a score is inaccurate or a product has changed significantly since our last update, we welcome your feedback and will investigate promptly.
